Viking Range Cooker History

In March of 1984, Fred Carl, Jr., who was developing the Viking range as a part-time venture while operating his design/build construction company in Greenwood, Mississippi, decided it was time to name his product and formally start the company, for he had reached the point of wanting to get more serious with his project. What to name it was the question.

They had arrived at this point within a few hours of beginning the process in the Hammons & Associates conference room. The more they discussed it, the more comfortable and confident each member of the group became with “Viking”. However, they decided that they should get others’ opinions on the proposed name as well and felt that a quick, informal survey was needed to confirm and validate their preliminary selection of the name “Viking”.

On March 22, 1984, Fred Carl, Jr. incorporated Viking Range Corporation with the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office in Jackson. He then commissioned Hammons & Associates to design the company’s logo, wanting it to project a visual image of strength, robustness and unfailing performance in keeping with then name “Viking”.

Thus began the saga of the brand that ultimately became the first commercial-type range for the home and went on to create an entirely new category within the major appliance industry worldwide, and which has become one of the most respected brands in the upscale consumer durable goods marketplace. In 2006, less than 20 years after the Viking range first entered production in January, 1987, Fortune Magazine ranked “Viking” second among the most sought after brands worldwide, behind the Apple iPod.
